Brief Biography:
I am a historian of West Africa in the 20th century. My research explores gender, motherhood, and politics in Côte d’Ivoire. Specifically, I am interested in how ideas about African motherhood shape possibilities for women's political action, and how expectations of political motherhood change over time.
Adapted from my current project, my article "Militant Mothers: Gender and the Politics of Anticolonial Action in Côte d’Ivoire," appears in The Journal of African History.
I hold a PhD in History from Stanford University, with a minor in Feminist, Gender & Sexuality Studies and a certificate in African Studies. I also received a BA in History and French & Francophone Studies from Columbia University. My research has been supported by the American Historical Association, the Fulbright Program, and the Stanford Humanities Center, among others.
